Great, informative post. Until I am able to expand my inventory, I am very happy with my 6 million dollar home Crumpler bag www.crumplerbags.com. The velcro on this bag is incredible which is much needed for me since I have been known to forget about the buckle and pick it up. (All the bag names from this company are quite entertaining).

Too bad the camera bags don't come with all the advertised equipment.

LauraG, there is a price difference and a big warranty difference. When these lenses, made for sale in other countries, are sold here, it is called Gray Market.

I have heard that lenses are made differently for different markets. For example, I've "heard" that Nikkor lenses for sale in the US are made in Japan, but the same lenses for sale in other countries are made in Taiwan or Singapore. Does this reflect a quality difference? I don't know.

The big thing is the warranty. If you buy a gray market lens, camera or computer, the company will not honor any warranty issue.

Most reputable camera shops won't sell gray market stuff. Others will come right out and give a price for standard merchandise and a lower price for gray market items. Your gamble. Don't be afraid to ask. if you're not sure you believe them, hang up and go to your local camera store or to a rock solid online dealer like B&H or Adorama.

Two great posts. I have always heard that you get what you pay for when it comes to lenses. I have seen lenses listed and priced differently for those made in the US and those abroad. Is there a big difference between those or is it more so the warranty?
